CASE STUDY
The King’s School, Chester
Driving staff engagement and culture with a new environment post-covid
The King’s School, Chester is a co-educational independent day school educating students between the ages of 4 and 18 across its Infant ‘Willow Lodge’, Junior, Senior and Sixth Form. They are one of the seven ‘King’s Schools’ established by King Henry VIII in 1514.
Having collaborated with TaskSpace historically on their new Sixth Form Centre, King’s Chester was quick to start work on their existing staff room spaces.
The challenge
The existing staff room space was neglected and in the post-covid landscape, was no longer an enjoyable space for staff to work, collaborate and socialise.
The challenge was creating an open space to attract staff out of their department areas into one central social space, encouraging them to collaborate and relax between lessons.
The solution
It was key to create an environment with multiple zones for staff. Aligned with attracting staff back to the staff room, and encouraging cross-department collaboration and interaction.
The new space needed to boost staff wellbeing and retention in the post-covid era, continuing to build a culture of academic excellence.
Key design considerations
- Multiple zones: creating unique spaces for staff to complete their day-to-day task within a collaborative environment was crucial.
- Efficient space planning: with a high volume of staff it was important to ensure the space was adaptable during high traffic times to accommodate the increase of staff.
Impactful outcomes
The King’s School, Chester witnessed a massive transformation in staff morale due to the new space.
- Staff satisfaction: the staff are returning to the space en masse and are encouraged to collaborate across departments and fully optimise the multiple zones.
- Academic culture: having a centralise space for staff enabled the school’s staff culture to flourish, contributing to the unique learning experience of The King’s School Chester.
Conclusion
TaskSpace created an environment conducive to focused independent work as well as collaboration and socialisation between staff.
With the staff room being another successful transformation, TaskSpace are now collaborating on the school library and other projects with The King’s School Chester.
