CASE STUDY
King’s College School, Wimbledon
A state-of-the-art Careers Hub shaping the people of tomorrow.
King’s College School, Wimbledon is an independent day school for boys aged 7–18, with a co-educational Sixth Form, based in Southwest London.
Founded by Royal Charter in 1829 as the junior department of King’s College School, the school appointed its first science master in 1855.
The challenge
King’s College School, Wimbledon lacked a dedicated innovation hub for careers, which is a key stepping stone for students as they decide their future pathways during Sixth Form.
The solution
TaskSpace designed an area that was intentionally different from a typical school environment, bridging the gap between school life and students’ future environments. The space gave the careers department a bold and meaningful presence within the school.
Key design considerations
- Machinery: Shoreditch studio vibe: The overall ambience was designed to avoid reflecting a traditional classroom. Design elements such as the exposed ceiling and wall panelling were suggested to create a workplace-style environment.
- Space planning: By reconfiguring the location of the office door, the space was used more effectively, providing a better line of sight into the room for supervision.
- Enabling choice: The design encouraged students to recognise the school’s investment in their future by providing a dedicated Careers Hub.
- Collaborative working: The furniture was curated to create a collaborative working environment for both students and staff, resulting in an adaptable, multi-functional space.
Impactful outcomes
- Designated space: The creation of the new Careers Hub provided students with focused support for exploring career opportunities in a dedicated space.
- Layout: The reconfiguration of the space ensured that the entire room was fully optimised, enabling student collaboration.
- Flexible workspace: The multifunctional hub, with its Shoreditch studio atmosphere, became a digitally enabled environment that students could fully utilise.
Conclusion
The transformation of the existing office space into a state-of-the-art Careers Hub supports students in their transition from school to further education and beyond. Additionally, it has given the Careers department a stronger sense of purpose within the school.
